Pool fences: what to know before your install

Winter may not be the first season that comes to mind when you think pool party, but in Charlotte, it’s actually the “golden hour” for pool safety. While your neighbors are hibernating and waiting for the first sight of a robin to call a contractor, you can be the savvy homeowner who gets their perimeter sorted before the desire to have a pool party kicks in.

Installing a pool fence is a bit like buying insurance or eating your vegetables. It’s not exactly “thrilling,” but it’s the responsible thing to do so you can actually enjoy the fun stuff later. Here is what you need to know.

1. The Law is the Law (and it’s Bossy)

In North Carolina, and specifically within Charlotte city limits, there are very specific codes regarding fence height, gate latches, and “climbability.” This isn’t just us being difficult; it’s the law. Generally, you’re looking at a minimum height of 48 inches. If you build a beautiful, custom fence that doesn’t meet code, the city will make you take it down.

2. The “Toddler Logic” Test

When choosing a style, look at the fence through the eyes of a caffeinated four-year-old. Can they get a toe-hold? Can they squeeze through the pickets? If the answer is “maybe,” then it’s a “no.” Aluminum pickets are a popular choice because they offer security without making your backyard look like a maximum-security prison.

3. Your Land Isn’t Flat

You might think your backyard is as level as a pancake, but unless you live on a literal slab of concrete, there’s an elevation change. Fences can be “racked” or “stepped” to follow the slope of your yard. Decide early if you prefer the smooth, flowing line of a racked fence or the “stair-step” look. One looks like a rollercoaster; the other looks like a set of stairs. Choose your fighter.

4. Self-Closing is Non-Negotiable

Your gate needs to be self-closing and self-latching, with the release mechanism high enough that it requires a “you must be this tall to ride” height requirement. It saves you from that mid-day panic of, “Wait, did Uncle Steve shut the gate after he went to get more ice?”

5. Think About the “After”

A fence changes the flow of your yard. Think about where you’ll put the lounge chairs, where the grill goes, and how you’ll get the lawnmower inside the perimeter.
